Vintage clothing is special and often more fragile than modern garments, but with the right care and attention, you can keep vintage garments in good condition for years to come. Here are some tips and guidelines to ensure your vintage clothing stays in top condition.
Always read the label
Many vintage garments still have their original care labels. This provides valuable information about how to wash and care for the garment. However, keep in mind that old care instructions may no longer be valid due to wear and tear or changes in the fabric.
Hand washing is the safest option
When in doubt, hand washing is almost always the best option for vintage clothing. Use lukewarm water (not too hot!) and a mild detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics. Soak the garment gently in the water and agitate it gently. Avoid rubbing or wringing, as this can damage the fabric.
Choose a mild detergent
Do not use harsh cleaning agents or bleach. Special detergents for delicate fabrics, silk, or wool are ideal. These products clean gently without damaging the fibers or causing discoloration.
Avoid dryers
Drying clothes in the dryer is usually disastrous for vintage clothing. It can shrink, distort, or weaken fabrics. Instead, dry your clothes flat on a towel, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. This prevents the material from fading or wearing out due to heat.
Steam instead of ironing
Many vintage fabrics can't withstand the heat of an iron. If you want to remove wrinkles, use a clothes steamer. Steaming is gentle on the fabric and refreshes the garment without the risk of burns or damage.
Machine washing is possible, but with extra care
From experience, we recommend hand-washing vintage clothing. You can also choose to machine wash it. If you do, always select a wool or delicates cycle and set the temperature to a maximum of 30°C. This is the safest option to prevent damage to the fabric. Set the machine to 900 rpm to further minimize the risk of damage. This cycle is gentle on your clothing and prevents excessive stress on the fibers. Please note: we are not responsible for any damage caused by machine washing.
